These vegan-friendly alternatives to maggie cube are great for plant-based cooking
Maggi cube is a popular flavoring enhancer or bouillon, that can be found all over the world. Before Maggi came around, West African cooks used fermented locust beans called iru in Nigeria and dawadawa in Ghana. Maggi is a brand, however, it has become a stand-alone noun in my Nigerian household. Maggi can come in cubes, powder, sauce, or packets. The closest competitor is Knorr, owned by Uniliver. Maggi is owned by Nestle. Unfortunately, beef and chicken flavor maggie have taken over the market.
Here are 8 alternatives to maggi cube:
1. Maggi Cube
Huh. I thought this was about alternatives to maggi cube? Well yes, it is. Maggi comes in a standard form using soybeans. This form is most common in international markets. I encourage you to read the ingredients before you purchase though.
2. Vegetable Flavor Maggi
"Okay, Fati...I came for alternatives." I know, I know. Hear me out. You get a different taste from the previously mentioned cube
3. Knorr Vegetable Cubes
Okay I know this is the competitor version, but if you're looking for alternatives - this will do.
4. Totole Mushroom Bouillon
Totole Mushroom Bouillon is my favorite brand, however, I find it difficult to find in store. When I do find it in-store, the price is still a bit high - $8 for the smallest container and $12 for the 1lb. Online is even pricer.
5. Better Than Bouillon
When I first found out about the Better Than brand, I thought they were a vegan brand. This is because they had a variety of vegan options like mushroom flavor, vegetable, and even a no chicken vegan flavor. They do however sell other options like beef, chicken, or clam. A little goes along way.
6. Herb Ox Vegetable Bouillon Cube
This brand provides a very light flavoring to your dish, perfect for dishes that you do not want to overpower with flavors.
7. Soy Sauce
Soy sauce is the perfect flavor enhancer, without the MSG. I like using Dark Mushroom Sauce in my broths.
8. Sazon or Adobo
Now, these two can be separated into two, however, they can be used interchangeably.
9. Trader Joe's Umami Spice
This is another light seasoning without MSG. I like using this to top dishes that need just a little bit more "something". This is also a light flavor.
10. Braggs Amino Acids
Though I haven't used this personally like the others, I would recommend this for those looking to avoid soy.
There you have it! 10 alternatives to maggi cube. This is not an extensive list, there are plenty more out there depending on where you live and what store carries it. Nevertheless, we are digitally connected in some form or another, so a quick order and some time can have our desired bouillon right at our door.
